Safety
Identifying Natural Gas Leaks
Natural Gas is odorized by a chemical called Mercaptan which adds a distinctive rotten egg or sulphur like smell to help you detect any leaks. If you smell this, you make have a leak.
What do I do if I think there is a leak?
If you smell gas or hear the flow of escaping gas, please follow these steps immediately:
1. Leave the premise immediately.
2. Do not turn on or off any electrical devices or light switches.
3. When you are in a safe area call your gas supplier and report the incident
4. Remain out of the building until you have been cleared to re-enter the premise
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
If you suspect you have CO in your house or if your CO alarm is going off, vacate the premise and call your gas supplier. Do not re-enter the building until you are cleared to do so.

You should have multiple CO detectors placed throughout your house, outside bedrooms, upstairs and downstairs. Place detectors where there is sufficient air movement, such as heat registers and return air ducts.
Fire
Incase of a fire, get to a safe space and call 911.
If it is safe to do so, turn gas of at the gas meter. Only do this if it is away from the building or area on fire.
Line Strike
If you happen to hit an underground gas line with your ground disturbance activities, turn off all equipment and get to a safe area.
Call you gas provider immediately and provide them with:
Legal land description
Name
Phone number
What equipment hit the line.

Remain a safe distance away until the gas supplier is on site and stops the flow of gas

When you are doing any kind of ground disturbance such as pounding fence posts, digging, planting trees, deep tiling or anything deeper than 12", you need to place a locate request with Utility Safety Partners at 1-800-242-3447
